years of controversy for generations, the cinco de mayo celebration has been demonized due to mistakes of the community from the past. >> what we're saying this year, right, is that it is a beautiful thing to celebrate cinco de mayo. it's something that we should be proud of. it's been a big transformation. >> i've seen that we've gone from not liking cruising to it being part of our community and it being a great thing for the city. >> for now, time to celebrate cinco de mayo in san jose. colonel bernard abc seven news. >> the city of san francisco is also celebrating cinco de mayo today near the mission district. nikki talib is beside friends and family, are out enjoying traditional mexican cuisine, cultural activities and live performances. cinco de mayo is the anniversary of the 1862 victory by mexican troops over invading french forces at the battle of puebla. here in the u.s, it's seen as a celebration of mexican american culture, which dates back to the 1800s in

california. today is also yom hashoah, a holocaust remembrance day. the contemporary jewish museum in san francisco has organized a poignant event remembering the approximately 6 million jews murdered in the holocaust by germany this year. commemoration. this year's commemoration is more profound given the situation in the middle east and the rise of anti-semitism here in the u.s. it's wrong what we're seeing and the inaction and the passivity becomes permissive behavior that allows people to feel that they're entitled to express their hate towards jews. a memorial name reading is taking place this afternoon, followed by a prayer service. an investigation is underway in oakland after a person was found shot to death near lake merritt. police say it happened today at noon at first avenue and east 12th street. the victim was found inside a vehicle in the parking lot of the america's best value inn hotel. it appears the car crashed in that parking

lot and the shooting happened at another location. to the latest. now on a story we've been following pro-palestinian protests on college campuses. the pro-palestinian encampment on usc's campus was cleared out today by the school. it was one of many on college campuses across the country. abc news reporter zohreen shah is following all the developments now from los angeles, the lapd on campus at usc early sunday morning, the school's department of public safety says officers were called in to provide security as the university worked to peacefully remove an illegal encampment. >> it seemed like, the people in the encampment followed lapd's orders. >> no arrests have been reported. cease fire now protesters gathering again at the university of texas in austin sunday we stand with palestine. the art institute of chicago. saturday swat teams called in after pro-palestinian protesters tried to set up an encampment. police facing off with them for hours. at least 68

people were arrested at the university of virginia police in riot gear, moving in to clear an encampment more than two dozen arrested. these protests, many of which have been going on for weeks, are now impacting graduation ceremonies at the university of wisconsin-milwaukee. an encampment still on campus despite graduation events. >> this should have ended long ago, and the only way this will end is if our demands are met. shut it down. >> shut it down. the university of michigan's graduation was briefly interrupted by pro-palestinian protesters chanting and waving palestinian flags. we shall not. in new york city, police moved in last week when protesters took over a building on columbia university's campus. >> the police came in and exactly two hours everything was over. it was a beautiful thing to watch these protests happening amid the war in gaza are now a campaign issue. >> breaking windows, shutting down campuses, forcing the cancellation of classes and graduations. none of this is a peaceful protest.

>> new york city mayor eric adams has said many of those arrested have been what he called outside agitators. >> when those protests reached the point of violence, as the president stated, we have to ensure that we use a minimum amount of force to terminate what is perceived to be a threat. >> zohreen shah, abc news, los angeles ucla will reopen its campus tomorrow. >> the chp officers last thursday began advancing on the encampment in response to violence involving counter-protesters, as more than 200 people were arrested and booked, according to the sheriff's department. in response, ucla's chancellor today announced the school's first associate vice chancellor for campus safety here in the bay area, encampments remain in place at san francisco state, uc berkeley, stanford, sonoma state and uc santa cruz. they have been mostly peaceful. last week, representatives from the american civil liberties union visited the protest area at berkeley to inform the students what rights they have while

protesting and what should be illegal. california continues to have the largest market share of tourism in the nation. that word today from the governor's office. in a video on social media, governor gavin newsom says travel spending in the state reached an all time high last year. >> last year, $150 billion of investment tourists around the globe coming to the great state of california, people coming back not only to visit, but coming back to live as well. population growth numbers now moving in the right direction. >> the governor's office says travel spending in 2023 surpassed the previous record of nearly $145 billion spent in 2019. in addition to visiting the state, more people are also moving to california, the governor announced earlier this week that california's population is increasing for the first time since the pandemic. a few days ago, we introduced you to an eight year old girl who planned to run in the bay

join us. women today, the american indian cultural center of san francisco held a spring dance at the presidio. the goal was to put a spotlight on the high rate of assault, abduction, and murder of tribal members. government data on the issue is inaccurate and incomplete, but estimates from advocacy groups find there are approximately 6000 missing and murdered cases that have gone unsolved. >> we want to make sure that our families get justice and so we want to bring attention to this epidemic and make sure that those loved ones that are missing or have been murdered, we say their name, that they get justice. >> this ceremony calls in the new season with hope and healing. and if you want to get involved in their cause, you can reach out to the group

indigenous justice. hundreds of runners are either resting up or celebrating after this morning's bay bridge half marathon, and that includes one of the youngest participants. eight year old margaux schiele accomplished her goal of finishing the marathon in under 2.5 hours. look at her go. marco's dad sent us this video as she crossed the finish line. they came from portland to take part in the race. margaux picked up running as a hobby when she was just six years old, and as a reward for finishing today's 13 mile run, dad says margaux gets a trip to target to pick up a couple of toys. she has already picked out. congratulations to her and all of the participants. well, over in the east bay, it was a day of exploration and action in piedmont. that's where girls ages two through 18 took part in an empowering event to try a variety of different sports. they also got to meet some inspiring pro athletes who are mentoring the next generation of athletes. the annual play like a girl plus

event allowed girls to try out more than two dozen different sports to see what interested them. >> you learn about your body and balance, and also the skills of to fall down and stand back up, to be supported by teammates around you to make mistakes and keep pushing that that great achievements takes hard work. >> yeah, what great messaging. hundreds, as you can see, attended this year's free event. well, a running theme now and a racing event today that brought together children from across san francisco with police officers. hey, john. >> charlie. good race. good job buddy. >> oh, look at him. >> the san francisco police activities league hosted its seventh annual kids games at kezar stadium. it's a friendly track meet where kids from 5 to 14 compete in 50 and 100 meter dashes and a long jump. the kids games were created and designed to support a competitive environment and to encourage

children to participate in healthy activities. the event attracts over 400 children, police officers, spectators and vendors in tahoe. may is looking more like march. a late season snowstorm has made history there. we'll take a closer look at the impact and taking a live look outside where things at pier 39 look nice and sunny and a totally packed crowd. but keep in mind, things are a little bit cooler than average today. we'll talk about the warm up with spencer next. >> a lot of seals are coming up in sports. the injury bug continues to plague the giants and meanwhile in oakland, the a's are one of the hottest teams in all of baseball in search of a seventh straight win and another sweep.

tahoe says it is covered with 26in of fresh snow. i guess it shouldn't be surprising, but the stat that i took away from yesterday was that we got more rain in that one day than the monthly average for the month of may. >> yes, that's right. so it was an unusual storm, but everything is unusual in weather these days. look at today. exactly right. so let's take a look at what's happening right now. we've got another day of robust onshore winds i mean some really strong gusts right now. we've seen gusts up to nearly 40mph today. right now we're looking at gusts up to 36mph at oakland, 35 at sfo and all around the area, 20 to 30 mile per hour winds. so it's breezy out there. feels chillier than it actually is. but we've had quite a warm up though in the last 24 hours. most locations across the bay area are anywhere from four to about ten degrees warmer right now than at this time yesterday. so there's some hope that things will continue warming up under blue skies. right now, we have 55 degrees here in san francisco

and at half moon bay, low 60s at oakland, hayward, redwood city and san jose. moving along. nice view from mount tam looking down onto the bay under clear skies. 63 right now. santa rosa 55 at petaluma. low 60s also at napa and fairfield. mid to upper 60s at napa and livermore, rather mid to upper 60s at fairfield and concord. and what a stunning view of the blue western sky from emeryville. these are our forecast headlines. clear, breezy and cool this evening and the beginning of the week. monday, tuesday. look for sunny and warmer conditions. in fact, a warming trend begins tomorrow, and by week's end we will be experiencing summer like heat across the bay area. but for tonight or for this evening, i should say from 5 p.m. up until about midnight, the clouds will be moving out. the wind will continue to flow briskly onshore . we'll have clear skies and breezy and cool conditions in the evening hours. overnight lows will be mainly in the mid 40s right around the bay shoreline. inland areas low to mid 40s and farther north. it

will be actually quite chilly. we don't have any frost advisories in effect, but we'll see lows of 36 at lakeport, 39 at santa rosa, 40 at napa. so it'll be pretty chilly during the overnight hours. highs tomorrow is 61. san francisco mid 60s. right around the bay shoreline 64 6566 degrees up in the north bay, nearly 70 at santa rosa tomorrow. close to 70 over at antioch. fairfield will probably hit 70 tomorrow. down at san jose, a high of 68, likely tomorrow. now, let's skip ahead to wednesday and take a look at that warm up coming our way. we'll see inland highs in the low 80s on wednesday. upper 70s around the bay. thursday even higher mid 80s mid to upper 80s inland up to about 80 8182 around the bay shoreline. we are likely to see a couple of locations hit 90 degrees on friday. it's going to be that warm inland and we'll see low to mid 80s around the bay shoreline. so here's the accuweather seven day forecast. warming continues, begins tomorrow, continues tuesday and then starts to really crank into high gear as we get later into

the week. and finally, after a little taste of summer like heat late in the week, we'll have just a slight cooldown next weekend. >> the a's put up a major league best, a season, best 20 runs last night, winning their sixth straight game. they hit the 500 mark for the first time this season and today at the coliseum, a chance to sweep. the marlins get over 500 for the first time since after the first game of last season, when they started one zero. the a's are sizzling. i'll take some carne asada on a cinco de mayo like for tacos, please. a starter joe boyle allowed the first three marlins to reach on all of them scored nick gordon a three run shot to right center, four. nothing miami before the a's even got to the plate, boyle left after one inning with back tightness. a's defense, though, staying active. look at tyler nevin at first base. oh, diving stop and gets over there for the out. keeps it a five nothing game but miami breaks it open scoring three times with two outs in the fifth. one time a christian bethancourt one of the three doubles in the inning. marlins had four more in the ninth. a's lose 12 three. bruce
