7:01 am
morning. thank you so much for starting it with us. i'm kira klapper cinthia pimentel has a look at our microclimate forecast and it was cold out there this morning. i had to run to my car. i did not want to get out of bed, throw the blankets out, but we're going to get through this. and the good news is we don't have any rain for our sunday plans. you can see the clear skies behind me, but those temperatures right now 43 degrees in san rafael, 49 in san jose. and it just gets cooler as we go on deeper into the valleys. look at santa rosa 39 degrees. we go on into parts of the east bay 44 in orinda. right now, as well as down here in saratoga, but a bit warmer just a little bit in san mateo at 50 degrees as we go throughout the day, we notice here clear skies in san jose getting ready for cinco de mayo festivities. it will be a chilly start. bring your jacket not only today, but also tomorrow as we welcome a new workweek and then much warmer ahead 70s and 80s. i think you like the sound of that, don't you care? i absolutely do look forward to
7:02 am
that. we'll see you soon, cynthia. thanks. we begin right now with breaking news this morning out of southern california, where the police officer is on the campus of usc. cleared the encampment of student protesters around 430 this morning. the university's public safety department sent out a notice to the students, warning they would soon move in to clear the encampment and that anyone who didn't leave could be arrested by police. lapd also assisted in the process as officers moved in in protective gear. our sister station in los angeles, knbc, saw protesters leaving peacefully. as of 5 a.m. police tell us the quote, illegal encampment was clear. no arrests were made. and the unrest, as you likely know, began just last month after usc announced it was canceling the graduation speech of its pro-palestinian valedictorian, the lapd then clashed with pro-palestinian protesters on campus. on april 24th. more than 90 demonstrators were arrested
7:03 am
back a week ago. meanwhile, across town at ucla. a different scene. this was just a few days ago when students and officers in riot gear clashed with one another as police dismantled that encampment following a week long protest. more than 200 people were arrested during the process at ucla and here in the bay area, the pro-palestinian camp at uc berkeley is still going strong, even in yesterday's rain. it has been two weeks since they first set up and the movement is showing no signs of slowing. there are about 150 tents there. it continues to grow. students and community members supporting the protests say they will not go home until their demands are met. they want the administration among other things, to divest from all companies that do business with israel. they also want the school to publicly support an immediate cease fire. meanwhile, an uptick in confrontations has some jewish students saying they're worried about their safety. in response, uc berkeley
7:04 am
has increased security and is offering to escort students who feel uncomfortable. now to an nbc news exclusive. we are learning about an investigation into whether a student's rights were violated when she disrupted a private dinner event, the incident was caught on video last month. you see, uc berkeley professor catherine fisk, scuffling with a student activist over that microphone just before the student was trying to give a pro-palestinian speech. this happened during a private dinner at professor fisk's home. she and her husband invited graduating students over for dinner. her husband is uc berkeley law school dean erwin chemerinsky. he is jewish, and they believe the annual dinner was targeted for that reason. cal is now investigating a title nine complaint filed by that student who is a known leading organizer of campus protests. cal says it currently cannot
7:05 am
speak on the matter. meanwhile, professor fisk nor the dean have responded to our request for comment. but previously, dean chemerinsky said in a statement that he strongly defends the right to speak one's mind in public forums. he wrote of the confrontation, quote repeatedly we said to her that you are a guest in our home. please stop and leave our home is not a forum for free speech. chemerinsky added that even if the private event was being held on campus, there would be no first amendment right to disrupt it. meanwhile, overseas, a delegation from hamas is in cairo. egyptian media is reporting there's been noticeable progress on a ceasefire agreement. israeli leaders say they will not agree to end the war as part of a deal to release hostages. they say they still plan to attack hamas in rafah, the city in southern gaza, of course, where hundreds of thousands of palestinians have fled the un says they
7:06 am
believe those people are in danger if no plan is made to protect civilians. there back here, locally and new this morning, one person is dead after a crash on a south bay freeway. it happened around 130 this morning on southbound 101. that's just south of matilda avenue in sunnyvale, the chp says during their preliminary investigation, it showed a honda civic was stalled on the shoulder of the carpool lane. a woman was outside the car. it's unclear whether she was part of that honda, but a passing driver swerved to avoid the car and instead hit the woman. she died at the scene. the chp is investigating how a third car, another suv, crashed near both of those cars at the scene. the driver who hit the pedestrian, by the way, was arrested for dui. we're going to turn now to a mystery playing out in the east bay. not one, not two, but
7:07 am
four tow trucks were burned in the east bay. and now at least two of those fires are being investigated as arson. today in the bay is alyssa goard has that exclusive story you'll see only on nbc bay area reporter. a tow truck up in flames. the whole thing caught on. a home security camera. it happened early saturday morning in a bay point neighborhood. take another look at the video. you can see someone run away and jump into a white suv that speeds off. the homeowners say the fire left their tow truck, their livelihood, a charred mess. they say another truck from the same fleet also parked in bay point, and two more in concord were lit on fire around the same time. 70 years of hard work, they seem more like disappear, you know, don ledesma owns the towing business and says all four
7:08 am
trucks are now totaled. it's hard for him to even look at the wreckage. he's that way. i feed my family. so ledesma says he thinks this was targeted. police say at least two of the fires are being investigated as arson. i hope that the police finds out who did it so they can go to jail or they do something about it. you know, investigators are asking anyone with information about the fires to call them. while ledesma is left wondering how he'll get the new trucks. his business needs. alyssa goard. today in the bay. well as we mentioned, today is cinco de mayo and the south bay is celebrating in a big way this year. there are two parades and festivals happening today in san jose. as a result, there are several big road closures in place. it will be a huge celebration of culture and heritage, and our today in the bay's tom jensen is live in san jose. not only is it cinco de mayo, but i heard it is tom
7:09 am
jensen's birthday, so a lot of fun to celebrate today. hey tom, how's it going out there? good morning. yes, thank you for that. yeah 101 years, though, before i was born, there was an important battle, mexico defeated france in the battle of puebla. this is a celebration of that victory in 1862. cinco de mayo has been celebrated ever since. an important part of mexican heritage, and one of those two parades begins right here at city hall at 9:00 this morning. and it goes to cesar chavez plaza, where the festival runs until 5:00 this evening. there will be folklorico dancers, music and a display of lowriders. we even expect to meet up with our own damian trujillo in one of those lowriders. one of those remarkable cars, take a look at the map, because there is going to be a number of road closures. so we prepared this map. they start at seven this morning and last until noon. one lane of south market near plaza de cesar
7:10 am
chavez will be blocked until ten tonight, though, to make room for the festival and then the cleanup afterwards, and then for the events on the east side of the city. there are more clures, which also just began at seven this morning, lt until noon or 5 p.m, depending on which road we're talking about. also, be aware that i-680 is going to be affected, from about king road to story road, the parade on the east side starts at the mexican heritage park, and it will feature hundreds of those unique lowriders from 70 different clubs, more than 70. and that parade ends at emma prusch park, where there will also be a festival from noon until 4:00. so a lot to be aware of. just make sure if you are coming down the downtown area, the east side, there is going to be a number of closures today. we hope everybody has a safe cinco de mayo in san jose. tom jensen today in the bay. all right, tom, thanks so much. 710 right now we have much more ahead on today in the bay. coming up we

take you live to washington, d.c. for our weekly interview with kristen welker, who has a
7:12 am
7:13 am
on college campuses across the u.s, the pro-palestinian demonstrations are now gaining traction across the globe, from london and paris to sydney and tokyo. please join me in welcoming kristen welker, moderator of meet the press. hi, kristen, great to see you as always. among those calling for a ceasefire now is a familiar face. john mccain's widow, cindy mccain. you were able to speak with her about what she's seen on the ground there as executive director of the world food program, and if i'm not mistaken, mccain min pardon me, is now declaring a quote, full blown famine there. is that right? kyra. you're absolutely right, she says. there is a full
7:14 am
blown famine in the northern part of gaza. she says it is stretching to the south and she issued a dire warning in my conversation with her, kyra, that more needs to be done to address the situation on the ground. she spoke in heartbreaking terms about the fact that this famine is impacting children the worst, that they are suffering. they are dying because they can't get the food, they can't get the nutrition that they need. so mccain says she has been speaking to prime minister netanyahu, urging him to do more, acknowledging that hamas continues to try to intercept much of this aid, which of course just complicates the situation on the ground in a tragic and dire way. now, it is worth noting that the israeli government reached out to say that they dispute the characterization that it's a full blown famine. but look, mccain is the second top u.s. aid official to make such a characterization. the first was samantha power with usaid. so
7:15 am
this is a significant inflection point. kyra it does come as we know, that negotiations are intensifying over a potential cease fire deal. u.s. officials telling nbc news that, yes, there has been progress, but so far, no official deal announced. and until everything is agreed upon, of course, there's no final deal. but the pressure mounting not just on the biden administration, but on its international partners to really try to get this finished very soon. and those sides negotiating in egypt right now. christian, thank you so much for that preview. as always, we look forward to seeing you in about 45 minutes from now, and we hope you join christian for this morning's meet the press. she will have exclusive interviews with senator mark kelly of arizona, as well as senator tim scott of south carolina, rumored to be on the short list of potential vp running mates for former president trump and that meet the moment interview with the executive director of the world food program, cindy mccain. if you just stick right here with us for today in the
7:16 am
bay, meet the press is on at 8 a.m. right after this newscast. and as always on sundays, coming up in about 30 minutes from now, we'll talk to nbc bay area political analyst larry gerston for our weekly segment. we'll take a look at the presidential run of robert f kennedy jr and his momentum. whether he can go up against president biden and donald trump back here locally, we were there for the end of an era for a longtime home of a comic book store in the east bay, but the owner tells us, have no fear, it is not the end of his story. yesterday, there was a huge line outside of flying colors comics. it was the 22nd annual free comic book day. the idea now global, was born at that very store. here's what inspired the owner, joe field looked out our front window and i saw a line and they weren't coming into my store. they were going to baskin-robbins for free. scoop night are just like
7:17 am
that. the phenomenon was born. yesterday was the final free comic day at that flying colors location. field says their lease is up soon, but they will continue at a new location. customers say they cannot wait for the store's next chapter. this month, we celebrate asian american native hawaiian and pacific islander heritage month, and in san francisco yesterday, the rain did not stop people for joining the third annual our heritage five k, the three mile run walk organizers say, embodies the unity and strength of the community. we were there for the opening ceremonies in japantown. the route passed by 14 different aapi landmarks, including the asian art museum and the dragon gate in chinatown . all this put on by the nonprofit group asians are strong. we were expecting about 1000 people, but i think about 3400 came out today, rain or shine. you know, i was really
7:18 am
impressed by our own community. you know, this shows resilience. like we want to celebrate. we want to show how proud we are and what more dramatic fashion than in the rain. also in chinatown, the 76th annual cameron carnival, the money raised yesterday will support the cameron house's youth and social service programs. despite the rain, a lot of people showed up. that bouncy house you just saw their games, free giveaways and food. the cameron house is celebrating 150 years of community service this year. in honor of that big anniversary, our gia vang visited cameron house. it is a community service and empowerment group for families in the heart of chinatown. gia took a look at its rich history and its dark past. hidden in those tunnels you see there. she'll report on what's in store for its future moving forward. you can see her entire report on our website,
7:19 am
nbc bay area.com/race in america . the hearts of fashion fans everywhere have been beating all weekend long. tomorrow is the first monday in may, and if you know what that means, it's the met gala in new york city, oakland native zendaya, jennifer lopez, bad bunny, chris hemsworth are among this year's event co-chairs. this year, the theme is the garden of time. fashion insiders predict nature will take center stage. the event is an annual fundraiser for the metropolitan museum of art in new york, and it is hosted by vogue editor in chief anna wintour. time now to check in with cinthia pimentel for a look at our microclimate forecast. no rain today, we hope. yeah, i think that we are all clear for today. we have a better chance to run around on this sunday, get to those events and we'll take it to our microclimate forecast. there are a lot of changes coming up. kira. we're starting to go into clear mode, but up into the sierra, there's a few more snow
7:20 am
showers within the next hour, so just wait a couple more if you need to go up there. now, as far as our rain yesterday, what's really interesting is that our may average. we beat that in some spots, like over on in san francisco as well as through san jose. very impressive there. and that is about it for this weekend. we're going to see clearing skies as we go throughout the day. more of that sunshine not only for today, but also head into the early part of the week. but behind this cold front, we also have to deal with the breeze now as we take it on into the afternoon. we see clear skies for just about everybody as we transition into those overnight hours, we'll just watch for a few areas of some patchy fog for our monday commute. how about going out to the cinco de mayo parade and festival down here in san jose? we're going to be bundling up for the start of it, but then into the afternoon and all of that dancing and celebrating, we'll probably put the jackets aside as we go on into the low 60s with a lot of sunshine covering down here in the south bay as we creep up into the peninsula in san francisco, it will be cooler down into those
7:21 am
upper 50s because of the breeze. but as we go on into our inland valley, santa rosa, concord, fairfield, that's where we get some of the upper 60s in the mix. looking forward into our monday morning commute, i mentioned the patchy fog, but also you might be cranking up that heater as we deal with another morning starting off in those 30s and 40s. similar to today, especially up there into the north bay, ukiah, clear lake in those upper 30s. as we go on into the central bay, we'll do mid 40s. but it will still be chilly. we're not used to this. haven't seen this in a while as we've been waking up mainly in the 50s, but as we transition into the early part of the week, middle part of the week, high pressure will build on in. we'll get more of that warmth feeling here in the bay area. definitely feeling like spring and possibly summer like as we get on into the second half of the week, more of that will build in 70s and 80s possible as we stretch it on in into our inland valleys. and i know we're looking ahead into next weekend, mother's day, making all those plans. maybe you want to celebrate mom outside. the only thing that we're watching here
7:22 am
is the potential for some snow showers to develop over. the sierra will track how far west this moves out, but overall keeping it in that long term trend. the only thing we're seeing here is the models trying to build a little bit more of that cloud cover. so overall, enjoy your next couple of days in san francisco, along with the breeze will also be building up those temperatures into some nice day. spectacular. the kind that makes you say, i love living in the bay area with 70s in the city. we'll go into our inland valleys, watch for the breeze in the chilly mornings. but then i think people will really love the weather once we get on into wednesday. thursday and friday we'll go into the 80s, maybe some mid 80s. some spots might be trying to flirt with those 90s as we go on into the early start of the weekend. wow, that's a drastic change. yeah, we look forward to it. cynthia. thanks. 722 right now we have much more ahead on today in the bay coming up, the earthquakes win for the first time in six weeks. we'll take you to the game. the black and blue rocking levi's stadium and the lafc. sports is next
7:23 am
7:24 am
7:25 am
over the home of the 40 niners for the first time this season, the quakes playing at levi stadium. more than 43,000 watching san jose face lafc. the quakes strike less than five minutes into the match, rodriguez with the header one. nothing san jose. then with the score two zip, cristian espinoza scores on the corner kick. the quakes snapped their five match winless streak. they beat lafc 3 to 1. it's a really important win. i think it was great support from the fans and the community to come to the stadium and a rainy day and to give us these numbers and energy that helped push us tonight to baseball, the giants and the city of brotherly love. playing in the rain is supposed to be fun. not for the orange and
7:26 am
black. the phillies scored five runs in the first. they added four more in the second inning. it's 9 to 1 in the fifth when wilmer flores smashes a two run shot. but it's not nearly enough. the phillies beat the giants 14 to 3 after a nearly 3.5 hour rain delay in oakland, the a's brought the thunder and the lightning against the marlins. the green and gold slammed six home runs, two by brent rooker in a ten run third inning. brett harris homered in the fourth and the sixth for his first two major league hits. he's going to remember those the a's hammered the marlins 20 to 4 for their sixth win in a row. they're off in the kentucky derby. who's it going to be? a little different with the derby. oh it's a photo. was it mystic dan wow what a finish in the 150th running of the kentucky derby. mystic dan wins by a nose in one of the closest one, two, three finishes in triple crown
7:27 am
history. wow, what a finish. that's a look at your morning sports i'm anthony flores for today in the bay thanks anthony. it is 26 past the hour right now and we have much more ahead on today in the bay coming up. we continue to follow breaking news at usc early this morning where the pro-palestinian student encampment was cleared. how police are saying the protesters responded. plus four tow trucks set on fire this weekend. and police in the east bay are now investigating. is the family investigating. is the family owned business being targedet in 10 years, lisa schneider will have an amazing second act. thanks to career reskilling courses from aarp. to help make sure her income lives as long as she does. the younger you are, the more you need aarp.

7:30 am
joining us. i'm kira klapper. cinthia pimentel has a quick look at our microclimate forecast. it looks nice outside the sun is shining, but those temperatures behind you, it's cold. i know yesterday morning we were staying indoors. today people want to rush out and enjoy all that sunshine, but you need to bundle up if you're going out there to get your coffee or maybe get your exercise going. this morning we're starting off 30s and 40s down here in the south bay, 39 in scotts valley. right now we go on to the east, solano county, 42 in fairfield and still in those low 40s as we go up into calistoga, as we go on throughout the day, we're about maybe 4 to 15 degrees cooler this morning, warming up with more of that sunshine that will come about. it will be breezy to kick it off, so i'm sorry for those of you dealing with the allergies, but then calmer weather and actually feeling summer-like as we go on into the week with 70s and 80s returning. i'll have more in about ten minutes here. back to you. all right, cynthia, thanks so much. we want to take you back to that breaking news we're following this morning out of southern california, where police officers early this morning
7:31 am
cleared the encampment of student protesters on the campus of usc. happened just around 430 this morning when the university's department of public safety sent out a notice warning students that police would clear the, quote, illegal encampment and that anyone who didn't leave could be arrested by campus police. the lapd also assisted in the process as officers moved in in protective gear. our sister station in los angeles, knbc, saw protesters leaving peacefully. as of 5 a.m, police say the encampment was clear no arrests were made as you likely know, the unrest began just last month after usc announced it was canceling the graduation speech from its pro-palestinian valedictorian. the lapd then clashed with pro-palestinian protesters on campus on april 24th. at that time, more than 90 demonstrators were arrested. meanwhile, across town at ucla, a different scene. this was just a few days ago

when students and officers in riot gear cleared out with one another as police dismantled that encampment following a week long protest. more than 200 people were arrested at ucla during the process. and here in the bay area, the pro-police camp at uc berkeley is still going strong, despite yesterday's rain. it has been two weeks since they first set up their encampment, and the movement is showing no signs of slowing. there are more than 150 tents right now. students and community members supporting the protests say they will not go home until their demands are met. among other demands, they want the administration to divest from all companies that do business with israel. they also want uc berkeley to support an immediate cease fire. meanwhile, there have been an uptick in confrontations that have some jewish students say they are worried for their safety. in response, berkeley has increased security and is offering to escort students who
7:33 am
say they feel uncomfortable. in other news, new this morning police are investigating after a woman was killed on a south bay freeway. it happened around 130 this morning on southbound 101, just south of matilda avenue in sunnyvale. the chp says that during their preliminary investigation, they discovered this honda civic was stalled on the shoulder of the carpool lane, and a woman was waiting outside of the car. a passing driver swerved to avoid the car, but hit the woman, killing her. at the scene, the chp is investigating how a third car, a white suv, crashed near those other two cars at the scene. we want to add that the driver who hit the pedestrian and killed her was arrested for dui. turning now to four tow trucks burned in the east bay yesterday morning, and at least two of those fires are now being investigated as arson. we want
7:34 am
to show you ring camera video of one of those trucks on fire in bay point. you can see at some point here a person running away as the truck bursts into flames. several people get into a white suv and speed away. california towing company says four of its tow trucks in both bay point and concord were burned in the early morning hours of yesterday morning. concord police tell us they're investigating the concord fires as arson. i hope that the police finds out who did it so they can go to jail or they do something about it. you know, investigators are asking anyone with information about any of the four fires to get in touch with them. we have new details this morning about a brazen theft at a sunnyvale jewelry store. you can see here. up to a dozen people stormed the store, clearing it out completely of their jewelry
7:35 am
inventory. today in the bay's marianne favro spoke with the stunned employees and the shop's owner. a frightening ordeal for employees here at nettie's jewelers, they say a group of suspects burst into the store and one of them had a gun. you can see where thieves smashed the glass in the front door of nettie's jewelers. investigators say as many as a dozen suspects wearing masks ran into the jewelry store on el camino real shortly after one. employees say the thieves used hammers to break the tempered glass of the display cases and clear out the store. police say at least one of the suspects had a handgun. i can't even imagine, like having to face something like that, like someone having a gun and walking in this kind of area where you normally would expect, like everything is going by very safely. so yeah, that scares me for sure a lot. the owner of the store says that these were in
7:36 am
and out in less than five minutes, and no employees were hurt. investigators with the sunnyvale department of public safety say the suspects drove off in several different vehicles. it's not clear if any customers were in the store during the robbery, but the brazen crime has left people in the bustling shopping center on edge, especially since many families come here to shop for groceries. so many suspects could go inside at the same time. it's kind of scary, but i couldn't still digest the fact that this happened today. the owner of the store declined to talk on camera, but told us he's been in business nearly 25 years and his store has never been robbed. there is a security camera inside the store, and tonight employees are working to get that video over to police. officers also say they don't know yet how much that stolen jewelry was worth in sunnyvale, marianne favro, nbc bay area news. well, at 736, we want to
7:37 am
turn back now to cinco de mayo celebrations, two parades and festivals taking over san jose state city streets. that's where we will see several big road closures due to all those celebrations and culture and heritage being honored today, the bay's tom jensen is live in san jose with what you need to know. hey tom. good morning. kara. yeah, one of the parade starts right here at san jose city hall and goes to cesar chasa plaza. cesar chavez plaza. that parade begins at 9:00 this morning. so just about an hour and a half. this is a celebration of mexico's victory over france in 1862, in the battle of puebla, and has been celebrated ever since. there will be a that parade that we talked about, and there will be folklorico dancers, music display of lowriders featured in the parade. our own damian trujillo will be in one of the remarkable cars, and there will also be the road closures with
7:38 am
two parades and two festivals going on. take a look at the map. they started at seven this morning and last until noon. one lane of south market near plaza de cesar chavez will be blocked until ten tonight. make room for the festival and for the cleanup after the festival and for events on the east side of the city, there will be more closures, which all also began at seven this morning and last until noon or 5 p.m, depending on the road. and also be aware that i-680 80 is going to be affected. from king road to story road, the parade on the east side starts at mexican heritage plaza and will feature hundreds of lowriders, more than 300 of them from 70 different clubs that parade that begins at ten will go to the emma farm park, where there's going to be another festival that goes from noon until 4:00 today. so a lot to be aware of, a lot of road closures to watch out for in the downtown area and on the east side. everybody just have a happy and safe cinco de mayo. back to you and a happy birthday
7:39 am
to our tom jensen. tom. thanks. there are other events happening across the bay area today. one in san francisco, one in sonoma and another in berkeley. if you'd like to find out more, go to nbcbayarea.com. you'll find the link right on our home page at the top in the trending bar. still to come on today in the bay. floodwaters slowly receding throughout neighborhoods in the houston, texas area, but forecasters are warning there could be more rain

beautiful start in the north bay, but chilly. so those people on the road, they're probably cranking up that ac as they get their plan started overall into walnut creek. it's been really interesting. let me show you. right there in the background, we see a little bit of those clouds lingering about the diablo range. also chilly out there in the 40s coming down here into san jose, clear skies, temperatures at 49 degrees. and as we go on through the morning,
7:42 am
we'll get a more of that. sunshine definitely lacked it yesterday. and that should help warm things up just a little bit. about five degrees warmer than where we were yesterday, but breezy at times. behind this cold front, so watch out. 15 to 25 mile an hour. winds could be gusty as we make our way out there towards the coastline. only in the upper 50s as we go on into san francisco along san mateo, low 60s through mountain view, up into the north bay. we see a few low 60s and as well as over on into fairfield, concord, and down here through the santa clara valley. sunset is at 804, and you can enjoy all of that sunshine and a lot of festivals and things going on around the bay area. maybe going out to the coast. bodega bay, the 51st annual fisherman's festival. so they're doing a blessing of the fish, having a lot of sonoma county wines and just having a good time out there with some music as well. but you do need a jacket as you go out there sunglasses, some sunscreen, some hats, and hold on to them tight temperatures will only reach there into the upper 50s as we go on into planning our first week of may. monday. we'll also start off with a chilly note, so

we try to get out the door with the heater, the sweaters, and then we're going to start to, you know, lose the sweaters a little bit as we go on into tuesday and wednesday. you'll feel that warmth right here. still breezy along the hills, but more 70s on the map. and by wednesday this is going to be feeling like summer and some of our inland spots. let me show you up into santa rosa, ukiah, vacaville, fairfield, more 80s on the map here. so we're going to be feeling that transition into spring as high pressure builds in here. and beyond that, even on into thursday and friday, we continue with the 70s and 80s inland. and let me show you what i'm looking at into next weekend. starting to make those mother's day plans. we're looking at a bit of a transition into a low pressure system that will creep on from the east. so over the sierra, bringing a little bit more cloud cover into the bay area. i'm not going to put any rain icons on this stunning 7-day forecast through san francisco. just until the models agree more into what's happening next weekend. but we'll go from the upper 50s to 60s to 70s in the city. there,

by the middle part of our work week and our inland valleys, though, it will be chilly and breezy, we have this to look forward to 70s by the time that we get into tuesday with some 80s, mid 80s, thursday on into friday, which will make people have a lovely start into their weekend. there indeed. all right, cynthia, thanks. 43 past the

three people are now under investigation in the case. the men disappeared last weekend, one from san diego. the other two brothers from australia. mexican officials say they found four bodies in baja california, near where the men were camping. investigators are awaiting for the people to be identified, but they do believe they are the three missing surfers. a man who knew one of the men says he was a great role model. he had a huge smile. he was just really

charming. confident i think he had a warm heart. i think he really cared about people. he looked you in the eyes, you know, it was all the things i want to teach my kids. mexican authorities are now saying the three suspects are two men and a woman. they likely assaulted the group of men while they were camping in that remote part of baja california. the water is slowly receding in houston, texas, where catastrophic flooding earlier this week flooded at least 700 homes in just one county. people are still under mandatory evacuation orders as more rain is expected today in areas already hard hit. emergency crews have rescued more than 400 people from their homes and flooded roads. no deaths nor injuries have been reported. turning now to decision 2020 for every presidential election year, someone other than the two major political party nominees,
7:48 am
so-called third party nominees run for the presidency. in fact, a half dozen or so have emerged this year, although robert f kennedy jr seems to be gaining the most buzz. nbc bay area political analyst larry gerston is here. hi, larry, as always, great to see you. good morning. why do you think i assume the name has a lot to do with it? kennedy is garnering so much more attention than the other third party candidates. you know, we start with the fact that it's old news. biden. right trump again, haven't we done this before? yes, we have done this before. and why are we doing it again? and this is age issue on top of it. they're both considered old relatively speaking. and so why are we doing this again with a couple of old guys. and then as you said, we superimpose the kennedy mystique and whatever you think about it, a long time ago, once again that name comes back and we have this sense of nostalgia for the good old days. why can't we have that? and boom, there
7:49 am
you have rfk jr. so what do you think voters who aren't familiar with rfk jr need to know? well it's interesting is that there's some democrats who feel an appeal. there's some republicans feel an appeal. now. now for the democrats, you want to think about a couple of things. he's anti-business. that's a good thing. if you're a democrat. he is a well known environmentalist, and he's willing to forgive student loans. so these are the kinds of things that some democrats find very appealing, and they're willing to consider moving away from the democratic nominee, joe biden, and he also appeals to many republicans as well. that's right. then we look at the republican side. and what is it about the republicans that makes him appealing? well, to those folks who are anti vax, he argues vaccinations cause autism . the fact that he's willing to pardon insurrectionists, that's a republican appeal. and no more aid to ukraine. and we saw how divided republicans were on that. now not all democrats go for candidate. not all
7:50 am
republicans go for kennedy, but for those on the margins who are looking for somebody else. that's the appeal. and there's the argument that he is getting attention or voters from both sides. how is he doing in the polls? you know, right now, kira he's hovering around 10, 10. that seems like a lot. but that's low really a small amount. but again, it's the appeal. now look, no third party candidate has ever won the presidency in modern times. you got to go back many, many years when there are lots of little parties. okay. but but the fact is ross perot, for example, got 19% once upon a time in 1992, and some people think that gave the election to bill clinton. more importantly, we want to remember the election of 2000. okay, gore versus bush. some of us can't forget it. what what a cliffhanger that was. and in the state of florida, bush wound up winning by 537 votes. and you said, well, who cares that made the difference. and why was that so important? because ralph nader, a running on the reform
7:51 am
party, picked up 97,000 votes out of over 5 million. most people think nader's votes would have gone, would have gone to gore, in which case gore would have won florida and the election. so the third party candidate, even though they don't get a lot of votes in a certain state one or another, that can make the difference. and that's what happened in florida. and some people think that could make the difference this time around. that's why people are watching so closely. rfc where he gets on the ballot, what kinds of votes? he gets more proof that every vote counts. i'll never forget that recount. i think i was at high school and it seemed to go on and on, didn't it? yep. all right. larry as always, thanks for talking to us this morning. great to see you. 751 right now up next we have a quick look at the top stories we're following, including that breaking news out of usc early this morning where the pro-palestinian student encampment was cleared. how police say protesters respondde

morning, including that breaking news out of southern california, where police officers early this morning cleared the encampment of student protesters on the campus of usc. it started around 430 this morning when the university's department of public safety sent out a notice to students warning that they would soon move in to clear the, quote, illegal encampment and that anyone who didn't leave could be arrested by campus police. this is a live look

right now from our sister station in los angeles, knbc. they tell us protesters left peacefully as of five this morning, police said it was all clear. no arrests were made as you can see that it is all clear there. just last month, the unrest began after usc announced it was canceling the graduation speech from its pro-palestinian valedictorian. and here in the bay area, the pro-palestinian camp at uc berkeley immovable despite yesterday's rain. it's been two weeks since they first set up on cal's campus. there are currently about 150 tents there. students and community members alike say they will not go home until their demands are met. among other demands, they primarily want the administration to divest from all companies that do business with israel, and they want cal berkeley to publicly support an immediate cease fire. meanwhile an uptick in confrontations has some jewish students worried for

their safety. in response, cal has increased security and escorting students who feel uncomfortable. in lighter news, now, it is cinco de mayo. the south bay is celebrating in a big way this year with not one but two parades and festivals happening today in san jose. there will be road closures as well as part of the huge celebration of culture and heritage. today in the bay's. tom jensen is live in san jose with more. hey tom. good morning. yeah, one of those parades starts right here at city hall. of course, these celebrations are all to celebrate. cinco de mayo, which is the celebration of mexico's victory over france in the battle of puebla in 1862. and. you're right. there's two parades, two festivals, a lot going on, a lot of road closures. that one parade starts here at city hall in a couple of hours, about an hour or so. and 9:00, and then it ends at cesar
7:57 am
chavez plaza, where there's going to be a festival until about 5:00. and then on the east side, another parade from the mexican heritage park to the emma prusch farm park. and a festival there from noon till about 4:00. so a lot to watch out for whether people are in the downtown or on the east side. as far as the road closures. and of course, we hope that just everybody has a happy and safe cinco de mayo. back to both of you. indeed. and one last time. happy birthday to our tom jensen. thanks for joining us on your birthday morning. and before we go, cynthia has one last look at the forecast. there were some cinco de mayo events yesterday that got rained on. nice to see the sun today. nice to see the sun. we are starting off this morning. chilly so just bring a jacket. if you are going out to san jose to anywhere around the bay area. but then we should see more sunshine and temperatures back into the 60s. no more chilly 50s like what we had yesterday. that was a return to winter that we don't want to go back to san francisco. over the next couple of days, we will build on that high pressure and see temperatures in the 70s. by the time we get to our middle of
7:58 am
the workweek and our inland valleys, we'll go from the 60s to the 70s to the 80s, mid 80s. by the time that we get to thursday on into friday, and i think as far as right now, we can keep those mother's day plans next sunday. hint, hint, start buying those flowers, those gifts. yes it is time. i didn't even realize mother's day was already next sunday. i'm looking forward to it. hopefully my boys are watching. they're probably not all right, cynthia, thanks and thanks so much to all of you for making us a part of your morning. as always, we have more local news for you tonight at five, six and 11. and cynthia will be back with your forecast. and we are always on at nbcbayarea.com. have a great sunday. we love to see you right back here ne
